Overview

The Master of Laws by Coursework will deepen and broaden your legal learning, developing critical evaluation of the law and consideration and analysis of the attitudes and values underlying it. During the course, you are expected to attain high competence in legal research and writing on areas of conceptual difficulty. The course leads on to the Doctor of Juridical Science (subject to normal entry requirements).

Entry Requirements

Prospective students must have:
(i) completed the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Laws of QUT
OR
(ii) have completed the requirements for the award of a degree in law at another tertiary institution which, in the opinion of the Director, Graduate Programs, maintains standards comparable with those required for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Laws at QUT
OR
(iii) hold a professional qualification in law and have at least three years of professional legal experience subsequent to first admission to practice and also satisfy the Director, Graduate Programs, that they have the requisite ability to complete the Master of Laws by Coursework degree.

In exceptional circumstances, an applicant who does not otherwise satisfy the normal entry requirements will be eligible for entry into the Master of Laws by Coursework degree in a specialist stream if they:

(i) have completed a Graduate Certificate in Law in a specialist stream
AND
(ii) have significant professional experience in the field of the Graduate Certificate in Law already completed;
AND
(iii) have achieved a grade point average of 5.5 in the units already completed for the Graduate Certificate in Law and whose course is approved by the Director, Graduate Programs.

This course articulates with the Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD).

Course Structure

Students must undertake a total of 96 credit points (8 units). This can be achieved in one of two ways:

1. Students may nominate a major from the list below and choose units to the value of 96 credit points from that particular major*;
or
2. Students can complete a "generic" major by choosing any postgraduate law unit to the value of 96 credit points.

The units from which 96 credit points shall be chosen are subject to availability.

Commercial Law, Environmental Resources Law, Public Law, Technology Law, Generic

NOTE: International students are normally only able to graduate with a "generic" major

Option 2 Students can complete a "generic" major by choosing 8 units from any of the lists below to the value of 96 cps
